History of Spradling Elementary

Spradling Elementary School was established in 1919 on a heavily wooded lot in Fort Smith. Its first building was a modest, four-room wooden structure without indoor plumbing or modern facilities. Despite its humble beginnings, Spradling quickly became an important part of the growing Fort Smith school system. The land was purchased from the Spradling family, whose name the school continues to carry today as a reflection of its origins and community ties.
The school’s earliest years were shaped by dedicated educators and families who worked to provide learning opportunities in a rapidly changing city. Students attended half-day sessions through the fourth grade before transferring to Trusty School for further education. Over the decades, Spradling expanded alongside Fort Smith itself, transforming from a small rural outpost into a modern, diverse elementary school serving generations of families.
